What to Expect at Your Yearly Exam

A comprehensive eye health examination is important as many eye diseases and vision changes can occur without warning signs.  Unfortunately, school screenings and DMV vision tests are not comprehensive eye exams. We recommend seeing an eye care professional for your comprehensive eye examination

We feel it’s important to outline the process so you can feel comfortable knowing there’s nothing to worry about.
Upon your arrival, our receptionist will welcome you as a member of our practice. We will ask you to complete a few forms. If you prefer to complete them in advance in the comfort of your home, the forms may be found in the New Patient Center. This paperwork provides us with your health history and other information related to providing you with the best vision solutions.
Below, we’ve also included a list of the most commonly asked questions.

Dr. Price Kowaleski will review any current vision problems, your family and general health, as well as discuss your hobbies and lifestyle requirements to better tailor the examination to you. There are many new ophthalmic and contact lenses as well as options that will serve you best if we know your visual demands and needs. Your eyes are very much connected to your learning, your neurological, and systemic health.

Dr. Price Kowaleski stays updated on all of the newest treatments and technologies so our office can best serve you.

We will take a thorough health and ocular history. We will update your medications and allergies. We will perform an auto-refraction that takes an estimate of your prescription. We will take the pressure in the eye often using an iCare Tonometer and is gentle and noninvasive. We will read any of your previous glasses and check how well you see with them. Dr. Price Kowaleski will talk to you about your visual needs and any ocular problems or concerns you are having. We will then determining your prescription for glasses. If you are interested in contacts we will recommend the best options for you and assess the vision with them on an evaluate the fit of your lenses. We will also check your eye health. Dr. Price Kowaleski will recommend a dilated eye exam to best see the inside health of your eyes. While you are dilating, you may choose to look at glasses and our experienced opticians will help you with your lens and frame selections. Dr. Price Kowaleski will then check your eyes for cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal problems such as diabetes or macular degeneration. Your concerns and findings will be determine any additional testing that we will need to perform. Throughout the exam and at the end of the exam, Dr. Price Kowaleski will explain your findings, make recommendations, and answer any questions you may have. She will recommend when you should return for care. Most of all, you will see that our whole team is here to care for you from start to finish.

Dr. Price Kowaleski will ask these questions during the portion of the examination when she is determining your prescription. The best part is — she averages all of your answers so there is no wrong answer. Dr. Price Kowaleski will ask you to compare a series of lenses to determine which is clearer for you. As the differences become less noticeable, Dr. Price Kowaleski will be closer to finalizing your prescription. For this reason, if you’re having a hard time choosing between the options, it’s a good thing! And don’t worry, she double and triple checks everything.

High blood pressure can affect the blood vessels in your eyes and can lead to future eye health vision problems. Most of all, Dr. Price Kowaleski as an optometrist is considered a primary care doctor and if checking your blood pressure saves your life, you will be glad she did.

This test is used to determine how your pupils and eye muscles react and is important in assessing neurological function.

Dr. Price Kowaleski dilates nearly all of her patients to check the health of the eye. If there is a reason that she should not, she will make this decision during your exam. The dilation is painless process similar to opening a door so Dr. Price Kowaleski can fully exam the retina. Dilation can also help detect diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and macular degeneration as well as retinal tears, holes and detachments.
